Foreign portfolio investors poured Rs 16,621 crore into Indian equities in the first half of August 2026. The buying extends July's turnaround after four months of heavy selling.

Foreign investors extend July's buying momentum into August, favouring consumption-linked stocks amid improving valuations and earnings.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned net buyers of Indian equities once again in August 2026, pumping Rs 16,621 crore into the domestic stock market during the first two weeks of the month, according to depository data. The buying builds on a similar reversal seen in July, when foreign investors ended a four-month selling streak, and marks a second consecutive month of sustained overseas inflows into Indian shares. The renewed appetite comes amid improving relative valuations, resilient corporate earnings and growing expectations of softer US interest rates, factors cited consistently across multiple market reports tracking the trend.

According to depository data cited by public broadcaster reports, of the total Rs 16,621 crore invested so far in August, Rs 11,199 crore came through stock exchange purchases while Rs 5,422 crore flowed in via the primary market and other routes such as IPOs, QIPs and rights issues. This split mirrors how National Securities Depository Limited, the regulator-recognised source for FPI flow statistics, typically categorises foreign investment data each month.

July's Reversal Sets the Stage for August Inflows

The August buying did not emerge in isolation. NSDL data shows FPIs invested around Rs 20,199 crore to Rs 20,200 crore in Indian equities during July 2026, a figure that reversed net outflows recorded in the preceding four months. That July turnaround followed a period of persistent selling between March and June 2026, when foreign investors withdrew substantial sums from Indian markets amid concerns over valuations, global uncertainty and competing opportunities elsewhere, including semiconductors and US yields.

The shift first became visible in the second half of June 2026, when foreign investors turned net buyers in financial stocks, investing more than Rs 14,000 crore between June 16 and June 30. That fortnight marked the largest such investment in financials in 2026 and reversed Rs 63,450 crore of outflows recorded in the first half of the same month. July's broader equity turnaround followed soon after, with foreign investors also expanding their presence in Indian debt markets under the General Limit and Fully Accessible Route categories.

Consumption-Linked Sectors Draw the Bulk of Foreign Money

Sectoral data from NSDL shows that consumption-oriented industries have been the primary beneficiaries of the renewed foreign interest. In July, Consumer Services attracted the highest inflows at Rs 10,201 crore, followed by Healthcare at Rs 7,755 crore and Consumer Durables at Rs 7,342 crore. Metals and Mining drew around Rs 4,937 crore. Together, Consumer Services, Healthcare and Consumer Durables absorbed roughly Rs 25,298 crore, or about 125 percent of July's total net equity inflows, according to a note from Vallum Capital, indicating simultaneous heavy selling in other sectors even as consumption plays surged.

Late-July data further sharpened this picture. Between July 16 and July 31, FPIs bought consumer durable shares worth Rs 4,958 crore and healthcare stocks worth Rs 3,654 crore. The same period also saw foreign investors turn buyers in information technology stocks for the first time in 2026, with inflows of Rs 3,358 crore for the month overall. Commentary from Outlook Business indicates that this pattern extended into early August, with foreign flows favouring autos, consumer durables and healthcare on the back of strong Q1 earnings, alongside continued interest in mid- and small-cap growth stocks.

Valuations, Earnings and US Rate Expectations Driving the Shift

Multiple reports point to the same three drivers behind the renewed foreign buying. Improving relative valuations of Indian equities compared with global peers have made Indian stocks more attractive after earlier corrections tied to heavy selling. Resilient corporate earnings, particularly in consumption-linked sectors such as autos, consumer durables and healthcare, have reinforced investor confidence following strong June-quarter results. Growing expectations of softer US interest rates, or a less hawkish Federal Reserve stance, have also improved the relative appeal of emerging market assets, including Indian equities and debt, as global investors reassess yield opportunities.

Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that the trend of FPIs turning buyers in India, which became pronounced in July, has continued into August, with strong interest also visible in the debt market. Market commentary has attributed the sectoral tilt toward autos, consumer durables and healthcare specifically to strong June-quarter earnings in those industries.

Year-to-Date Outflows and Risks That Could Alter the Trend

Despite the recent buying, foreign investors remain net sellers of Indian equities for 2026 as a whole. Cumulative outflows for the year stand at approximately Rs 2.4 trillion, a figure that already exceeds the total outflow recorded in 2025. This underscores that the July-August buying represents a partial reversal rather than a complete change in the year's overall trend.

Market commentary has also flagged risks that could disrupt the current buying streak. Research from Bajaj Broking has pointed to elevated crude oil prices and US-Iran tensions as potential headwinds that could inject volatility into foreign flows in the coming weeks. Whether the August momentum sustains into September, and whether foreign investors continue favouring consumption-linked sectors over financials and IT, remains dependent on evolving corporate earnings trends and shifts in US monetary policy expectations.
